Grace Church and Lawrence, NC
On my first trip to Scotland Neck in 2011, I passed through Lawrence, NC, on Hwy 258 at the intersection with Hwy 97. I took some pictures of the old store there, but completely missed Grace Methodist Church, which is next door to the church. On this trip in November 2014, I saw the church and stopped to take some pictures. On the first trip, I later met Bubba Dupree when I was taking pictures of his red barn. I had met he son, Joe, when asking permission to take pictures of the barn. Mr. Dupree was very nice to me and showed me Tommy's Joynt, a local hangout for several friends. I sent Mr. Dupree copies of the pictures and talked to him by phone.
Since that trip, Mr. Dupree had died and was buried at Grace Church. I took a picture of the church with his headstone in the shot without making the connection. After taking the shots, I drove north on 258 toward Scotland Neck and stopped to take a picture of an old store that had been damaged in a recent storm. While there, I met Mr. and Mrs. Staton, who now owned what was Cotton's store. Ms. Staton told me that Mr. Dupree had died and was buried right in front of Grace Church. I then realized I had taken the picture of his grave site. The people in this area are very nice. I hope that some of them will see and enjoy these pictures.
