Northern Cascades, Washington State
In September 2021, we flew to Seattle and ferried to Orcas Island, spending a few days there in Eastsound. We then traveled to Mt. Baker and the surrounding area before setting off on Hwy. 20, which is the main highway through the Northern Cascades. The mountains, waterfalls, lakes, dams, and forests are beautiful. We followed Hwy. 20 to Mazama, a cross-country skiing area, and Winthrop, a "wild-west" themed small town.
We exited the Cascades to drive east to see the Chief Joseph and Grand Coulee Dams and discovered Dry Falls, where a huge lake was once fed by a giant glacier. As the glacier melted over time, it deposited large volcanic rocks it had been carrying. The rocks look like "scabs," thus giving the area the name, "Scablands."
We then drove across the agricultural area, apples, etc., back to the Cascades, spending nights in Lake Chelan and the Bavarian-themed town of Leavenworth. We explored Hwy. 2, which runs out of Leavenworth, and then drove east on I-90 to the falls at Snoqualmie before flying home from Seattle.
