Shenandoah Valley
Joyce and I spent a week with friends at the Massanutten resort near Harrisonburg, VA, in May, 2017. The resort sits in the Shenandoah Valley, and I took the opportunity to explore the area and take photos. The Shenandoah National Park is nearby, anchored by the beautiful Skyline Parkway, which features many excellent overlooks. During the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps built the roads and an incredible amount of stone walls, hand built, throughout the park (see the first three pictures). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shenandoah_National_Park
The area has many beautiful farms, and the gallery features many pictures of barns.
We also visited the Virginia Civil War Museum in New Market, Virginia. The museum is located on the Bushong Farm, where Confederate troops defeated a larger Union force in an 1864 battle, part of the Valley Campaign. One hundred cadets from Virginia Military Institute, which was located in Lexington, about 80 miles away, marched to the Town, participated in the battle, and played an important role. The farmhouse and other buildings are still on the site. There was a reenactment of the battle on May 15. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_New_Market
There is so much history and beauty in this area.
