West Virginia Safari

On the way to and from White Sulphur Springs, WV, and during our stay at The Greenbrier Resort, I took the time to explore this area of West Virginia. This gallery has shots from those safaris. I took the foggy shots at sunrise one morning as I explored Vago Road, a long rural road outside Lewisville, WV. A gentleman who works at The Greenbrier had seen my camera when we checked in and recommended this road when I asked about good places to take pictures.

The cavern shots are from the Lost World Cavern, also outside Lewisville.

On the way back home, we drove to the famous bridge over the New River Gorge and stumbled on to Thurmond, WV, once a thriving community built around coal and the railroad. It is now a "ghost town" with a population of between 7 and 9 people. It is part of the national park and the Park Service has restored the old railroad station - Amtrak still stops there and did so while we were there. Like many towns in this area, Thurmond is sandwiched between the mountains and the river. The town was incorporated in 1900 and accessible only by rail until 1921. The National Bank of Thurmond closed in 1931. The town had a red light district and a resort hotel, the Dun Glen, which,.acording to Ripley's, was the setting for a 14-year long poker game. (Wikipedia) The hotel burned in 1930.
